SACRAMENTO, CA— Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria issued the following statement on Governor Newsom’s May Revise budget release:
“The Governor’s May Revise preserves funding for key capital projects at UC Merced,” said Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria. “Prioritizing funding to support campus expansion projects to accommodate future enrollment growth and planning for a UC Merced Medical School is a critical investment. The establishment of a medical school at UC Merced will transform the lives of families in the Central Valley and bring economic vitality to our region. I applaud the Governor for continuing to invest in community college nursing programs and standing by his commitment to improving workforce development. Building a nursing pipeline in the Central Valley is essential to addressing our health care workforce shortage.”
The May Revise proposes to solve a $27.6 billion budget shortfall through a combination of solutions including cuts, efficiencies and a leaner government.
“Our budget situation requires all of us to tighten our belts and cut unnecessary spending,” said Soria. “I look forward to working with the Governor, my legislative colleagues and stakeholders to finalize a state budget over the next several weeks that solves our spending problem with real solutions but also advances the need of our Central Valley community.”
The Governor’s 2024-2025 May Revise budget proposal also preserves the following core services:
- Young Child Tax Credit
- Foster Youth Tax Credit
- Earned Youth Tax Credit
- SSI/SSP - Income support aged 65+, blind, and disabled
