Tuesday, January 26, 2021

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose), Chair of the Committee on Labor and Employment, responded today to President Joe Biden’s planned nomination of California Labor Secretary Julie Su to serve as the United States Deputy Secretary of Labor:

“I commend President Joe Biden for recognizing Julie Su for her exceptional leadership and nominating a member of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community to serve in this capacity. The decision to nominate Secretary Su to serve in a cabinet-level position of the federal government is great news for all working people across the nation.

“Julie Su has spent her career fighting for workers’ rights here in California—from heading our state’s Division of Labor Standards Enforcement under Governor Jerry Brown to being appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom as Secretary of the Labor and Workforce Development Agency—and I have no doubt that she will continue to thrive in her new role as the United States Deputy Secretary of Labor.

“As Chair of the Assembly Committee on Labor and Employment and a member of California’s Future of Work Commission, it has been an honor working with Secretary Su while she helped guide the Commission’s work on creating economic equity and promoting job quality. I look forward to having a partner and dedicated advocate for workers in the federal Department of Labor.”
